Insights from 2021’s OVBC Annual Interdisciplinary Conference

Home-based virtual PT and value-based care are here to stay

At the annual Orthopedic Value-Based Care (OVBC) conference, Dr. Asheesh Beedi highlighted the cost-effective benefits of validated home-based Physical Therapy (PT) programs in his presentation, "Postoperative physical therapy is in the home." His robust literature review drove home that home-based PT programs are effective in achieving the same or better outcomes and will endure the pandemic (Rothman et al, 2017).

Web-based virtual PT in the post-COVID era has created new hybrid models for instruction and care delivery. Evidence-based medicine is necessary to identify the ideal patient populations to address the appropriateness factor of care to improve value in healthcare. These hybrid models of clinic-based and home-based PT may deliver maximum value and align well with the Triple Aim framework, to improve population health, reduce healthcare costs, and improve the patient experience.

Value-based care principles are at the core of Force. Our Clinical team, Sarah Ulcoq, Head of Clinical Solutions & Research, and Mikayla McGrath, Research & Strategic Partnerships Associate, participated at the OVBC Conference and came away with three key insights on the future of orthopedic value-based care.

  • Bundles and payment models will continue to grow
  • Forward-thinking hospitals/systems will invest in ASCs
  • Reimbursement goals are achieved through superior patient experience

Digital health technologies are already proving their success and are well-positioned to address these shifts without sacrificing care quality. The utilization of technology can transform care for patients; however digital products that are very specific and focused on only a few aspects of care versus the full needs of the patient are not the full solution. Technology that can holistically tend to patients, can reduce time and money spent, which are at the center of the health care value equation.
